9 Vacation Spots in Greece You Must Certainly Not Forget to Visit

Greece has always had one of the most important geographical settings in the world; it lies at the crossroads of Europe, Africa, and Western Asia. This position gave it an inflow of tourists, maybe before tourism even became an industry. Modern tourism started developing around the 60s. Today, Greece is continuously trying to remodel its tourism campaigns to attract tourists, which are just increasing in number. While there is no dearth of sights to see in this country, the top 9 are mentioned here.

1. Athens
One of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is also the capital of Greece. Famously known as the birthplace of democracy, this city is a must-visit because of the several, ancient architectural marvels present here. The Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery―both UNESCO World Heritage Sites―are situated in Athens. Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora of Classical Athens, and the Panathenaic Stadium are some of the most important archaeological monuments of this city.

2. The Metéora
Situated in central Greece, The Metéora is one of the largest complexes of 6 Eastern Orthodox monasteries, situated on cliffs of sandstone rock pillars, some of which are approximately 550 m.

3. Delphi
The Greeks believed that Delphi was the center of the entire world. Situated on Mount Parnassus, it is one of the most popular archaeological sites. Delphi Archaeological Museum, situated at the foothill of the complex, is home to some of the most important artifacts of Delphi.

4. Corinth
Corinth was one of Ancient Greece’s greatest centers of wealth. However, Roman invasion some 2000 years back, reduced this city to rubble. It’s now a major Roman archaeological site, with excavations introducing more data about the ancient city.

5. Monemvasia
The town of Monemvasia is located on an island in Laconia, and is completely equipped with good restaurants and shops.

6. Cyclades Islands
This group of island in the Aegean Sea, consists of numerous islands like Crete, Naxos, Santorini (Thira), and Mykonos. All these islands have fantastic beaches and archaeological sites. Santorini is said to be one of the most picturesque islands in the world. Mykonos, on the other hand, is famous for its nightlife. Also, don’t forget to visit the sacred island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

7. Dodecanese Islands
Home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Dodecanese islands were some of the most important in the region. It is from here that the region was controlled. Kastellorizo, Symi, and Tilos are other important islands in the chain.

8. Ionian Islands
Ionian islands are a group of six islands in the Ionian sea (traditionally, there were seven). Of these, Corfu is perhaps the most famous. The Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

9. Sporades Islands
An archipelago situated on the east coast of Greece, the Sporades Islands are serenely beautiful. Out of 24 islands in this group, the four islands of Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros are permanently populated.

So, if you have waited long to make a trip to this glorious land, I hope I have given you some really good options to choose from.
